Essay: Open Source Software

Nowadays, the use of open source software it’s becoming very common. Besides the low cost, open source software offers many others advantages over proprietary software. The availability of the source code and the right to modify it, the right to redistribute modifications and improvements to the code and the right to use the software in any way are the three most importants advantages of open source software. Working around open source software projects has to be an objective for every programmer over the next years.

In first place, Open Source Software enable us to unlimited tunning and improvement of a software product. It also give us the possibility to port the software to other hardware or adapt it to changing conditions. The avality of the source code makes it much easier to isolate bugs, and to fix them.

In second place, Open Source Software give the right to redistribute modifications and improvements to the code, and to reuse other open source code. This enables software to be shared by large programming communities.

The right to use the software in any way combined with redistribution rights, ensures a large population of users, which helps to build a market for support, custimization and improvement of the software. This helps to improve the quality of the product, and to improve its functionality.

Therefore, involving in a open source software project over the next few years has to be an objective of all programmers. Open Source Software is free to modify, redistribute and use. This are only three of the most imprtants advantages that open source software give us programmers.

English Usage of Semicolon

In English, the semicolon has two main purposes:

1. It binds two sentences more closely than they would be if separated by a full stop/period. It often replaces a conjunction such as and or but. Writers might consider this appropriate where they are trying to indicate a close relationship between two sentences, or a 'run-on' in meaning from one to the next; they do not want the connection to be broken by the abrupt use of a full stop.
2. It is used as a stronger division than a comma, or a "super comma" to make meaning clear in a sentence where commas are already being used for other purposes. A common example of this use is to separate the items of a list when some of the items themselves contain commas.

There are several rules that govern semicolon placement:

1. Use a semicolon between closely related independent clauses not joined by a coordinating conjunction: "I went to the pool; it was closed."
2. Use a semicolon between independent clauses linked with a transitional phrase or conjunctive adverb: "I like to ride horses; however, they don't like to be ridden by me."
3. Use a semicolon between items in a series containing internal punctuation: "There are several Waffle Houses in Atlanta, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; Pensacola, Florida; and Mobile, Alabama."

A semicolon can be used to separate independent clauses that are joined by coordinating conjunctions when the clauses have internal commas that might lead to misreading: "After the game, I won a red beanie baby, four edible ingots, and a certificate of excellence; but when the storm came, I lost it all in a torrent of sleet, snow, and profanity."

Semicolons are always followed by a lower case letter, unless that letter begins a proper noun. Semicolons are placed after closing quotation marks.

Examples:

1. I am alone; my wife left me.
2. I travelled to London, England; Tijuana, Mexico; and Reykjavík, Iceland.
3. When I finish here, I will be glad to help you; and that is a promise I will keep.

Diary Entry

Today I've been at AMLI for 4 months, and for the fist time I've seen the beauty of the building right next to us. When Mr. Salgado said that we were going outside for a walk, I thought it wasn't a good idea because by that time, Managua's heat was at his maximun level. Some minutes later I changed my mind, going around the Invercasa building helped to wake me up, because the nighht before I had gone partying.

Reaction Journal

In the article "Cannabis drug may help fight obesity", Amie Ferris-Rotman discusses the development of new cannabis derived drugs that could help fight obesity. Several big drug companies like GW Pharma and Sanofi-Aventis already have drugs in the market or on trials that can supress appetite. They've recently found that cannabis has components that can stimulate appetite and others that can supress it.

These new drugs could be a good alternative to existent ones that are known for having really bad side effects, e.g., Sibutramine based drugs like Raductil can increase heart rate and blood pressure of patients.

Process Paragraph

The Rational Unified Process is a software development process that is composed of four phases. In the Inception Phase business context and financial forecast is established. The Elaboration Phase is where the project starts to take shape. In this phase the problem domain analysis is made and the architecture of the project gets its basic form. The Construction Phase involves component and other features of the system being design. This is the phase when the coding takes place. In the Transition Phase the product has moved from the development organization to the end user, and is checked against the quality level set in the Inception phase.

My father was an imprtant influence on me as a child. He was interested in listening to rock and blues music. For example, he loved Stairway to heaven from Led Zeppelin and Hey Joe from Jimi Hendrix. I lestened to his cd and tape collection and i liked rock music too. Today, i love to listen to rock music because of his influence.
